Organize

t is essential to organize your home and office. It will increase productivity and reduce stress. Your spaces directly affect your mind and the energy you project. A person’s demeanor reflects how they live and work. As a resume is the first impression for a job, so is the impression from a presentation. Would you want to visit or work with such a person?

The first suggestion is to look at circulation in relation to the exterior and interior entrances. After  access is defined, activities can happen within the spaces that are clear.  Storage can be used to define circulation from activity. Free standing shelving expands storage along paths. Open shelves are useful along paths to admit natural light and maintain visual or audio contact. Closed shelves are excellent to increase privacy on paths leading to restrooms or rooms used for prlvacy.

Wall surfaces can support shallow or deep shelves. Walls are excellent surfaces to mount white boards and Homasote covered with aesthetically pleasing fabric for pinups; graphics, and notes.

Shelves store books and more. I always say, “Go UP!” to maximize professional reference space. There are many examples of containers that can be used for all types of content to segregate them for easy access.

Look at what you have to store and what your want to store, what is necessary for your home or business. In this process, decluttering is good to remove – recycle or reuse what you have or wish to donate.  Repurpose existing pieces. There was a great home design show that gave people the permission to split their furniture sets to outfit other rooms.  My husband had the wit to bring a large chair that was a part of the living room ensemble into the bedroom. We used it to watch media. And he never saw the show.

Fill in the gaps with furnishings and supplies.  Keep in mind that flow and circulation are important so control how much furniture is collected. Open spaces, exiting and entering should be clearly defined.
