Meditation for Freedom

his is a meditation for freedom. It began as a meditation for the enslaved, is an attempt to recognize the lives of oppressed beings forced into free labor. It is not limited to the enslaved; it can be used for people who experienced the negative use of power. Our souls are eternal.

Things take time to create. It also takes time to recreate. Things seem to happen quickly when we are unaware and slower when we are. We can change our outcomes so that the experiences change us mentally and emotionally to affect both and may manifest physically.

Learning about the past and its atrocities is unnerving. It serves no purpose to carry anger towards the dead, however, meditation can clear and help to focus on changing the systemic racism in the world.

How intelligent is one if one cannot recognize or acknowledge or CHOOSES not to recognize or acknowledge intelligence in its many manifestations and expressions?

Nature 2 by Allison L. Williams Hill

Carl Von Linnaeus' racial, racist classification of 1735 amazes me as it was and still is considered a classification of man from the 18th century to today. Yet, survives today as a legitimate identifier of people, based in his steeped emotions and nothing else.

I looked for this man's education and came across the Linnean Society that did not include comments on his racial classifications. What is interesting is that this website documents his so-called important work to position this man, for example as the originator of taxonomy, but does not substantiate his racial classifications. Taxonomy can be, as Dr. Joy Degruy mentions many times in her work on cognitive dissonance, weighted and measured, the European way.

The racial classifications had and still have no basis for being other than his feelings and observations on the ones he viewed, subjected to unwanted, unacceptable  labor. These descriptives serve whites conveniently to separate them from their humanity.

The Meditation

There is more information available for us to use.

Dr. Joy DeGruy's work on "Be The Healing"; Gerald Horne, who wrote incredible books on history and is Chair of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston;  Our responsibility is to support the scholars who collected this information for us. Remember, it was hidden and destroyed out of fear by the people who think they are superior to all people of color around the planet. It is easy to think you are superior when you engage what I call the SORDs - suppression; oppression; repression, and depression.

Meditation is, I think, our greatest tool to compose and center ourselves for the greatest work possible. Keep  pen and paper near you so that you can record your thoughts immediately after the meditation ends.

Breathe to relax the entire body, starting with the head and ending with the toes.

Breathe in seven counts; hold seven counts, then breathe out eight counts.
Use what is comfortable for you.

Count down from five to one.

Use our tools - audio; kinesthetic, or visual - to hear, feel or see or a combination of them all, the ancestors AND people you know. See all of them in a field. They are acknowledging each other, smiling, hugging. You hear music from the Motherland, whatever comes to mind, drumming, flutes, koras, even some of the sound track from "The Lion King." They form a circle, the center is empty. They are feeling and communicating love to you. They are also informing you of what they want and need for you to know. Also ask questions; they are there to help.

If you sense anything different from what you have read, what you have been told or heard, acknowledge it because they are talking to you. They are helping you understand the past and what has been integrated into our DNA to cause us to think and act the way we do today. In the circle, one column, then another and more form, rising up from the ground and become people you admire. These people are friend, acquaintances, people of the community, entertainers, and public figures - ancestors all because they died.

Meditation Questions

Ask questions, for example:

What must I know now?

What can I do for you?

How can you help us from where you are?

What should I know about your life?

What bonds, barriers, or obstructions stopped you from being the best person in your life?

What did you want to do that you could not or would not do?

What would you do differently?

What suggestions do you have for me?

How would you like to see the world change?

If there are no questions, listen.

When you feel the session is over, say thank you and goodbye to those who have gathered to support you. Express love because they are always with you. Count up from one to five. Open your eyes. Record your thoughts.
