Caregiving and Essential Oils

What Are Essential Oils?

use caregiving and essential oils to not only improve the space but to affect our emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. I watch my husband's moods and attempt to improve his health with oils. He stopped speaking some time ago. He asked me to become more psychic. In that regard, I attempt to observe his health and how he feels.

I watch my husband's moods and attempt to improve his well-being with the oils.  He stopped speaking some time ago, which I learned much later was called aphasia. One's words are inappropriate for the conversation. Experiencers tend to repeat words His spoken thoughts would not make sense. He asked me to become more psychic. He stopped speaking when he realized I did not understand what he was saying, and to make matters worse, I would correct him. This man has several degrees, including a doctorate. He knew what was happening, but I didn't get it.

I watch and attempt to determine if he feels better and at peace.

What is Caregiving and Essential Oils?

My husband, since I met him, liked fragrances. He would use them to make himself smell good.  He would apply them so he could smell them also. We used them in the first home we occupied together. He used incense also. Fragrance was essential because it helped to create an environment.Tea tree, lemon, and thyme can purify the air to eliminate unpleasant odors and their effects without chemical cleaners.

Essential oils can soothe. Going through this severe reduction in independence can depress people. I felt that surrounding him with fragrance would calm him and assist in his state of being.

I use them for spiritual purposes. The anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial benefits cleanse spaces physically and spiritually. I acknowledge the properties of these natural products used for centuries. Archaeological information revealed what many cultures used incense for in personal, religious and spiritual purposes.

You can't get more natural. Unless the resin, flower, branch, were acquired from trading, the essential oils were created from indigenous substances that grew where the people lived.

Bring nature inside. The aromas evoke treasured memories for the care receivers.

When Did Caregiving and Essential Oils Begin?

Essential oils are volatile extracts from flowers; seeds; bark; leaves; fruits; spices, and herbs. Essential oils are commonly extracted by distillation. The first known users of these were Egyptians for many aspects of living including religious, adornment, and preserving the dead.

The Egyptians used them from approximately 3000 to 2500 BC.They used oils from plants for spiritual ceremonies and medicinal purposes. Mummies were prepared with oils and buried with them. People used distilled cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, cypress, lavender, and juniper oils for adornment with cosmetics and perfumes.

The Chinese have a tradition with herbal and plant knowledge. Traditional Chinese medicine included tinctures, essences, and infused oils from flowers, herbs, spices extruded with steam. Traditional Chinese Medicine included treatments for mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Essential oils were used for Feng Shui, or the Art of Placement, remedies to balance environments within nature. The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica and the the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine, for example, organized medicinal information.

India and essential oils had a relationship for over 5,000 years. They used them the same way the Egyptians did.

In India, Ayurveda, or the "Science of Life," is their ancient holistic healing system, developed thousands of years ago and is used throughout the country and the world. The fantastic thing about this is no one knows who created it. It is a gift of wisdom and knowledge that they all share and use. There are modern Western sources that deny its effectiveness, proven to be efficacious in thousands of years of treatments. The beauty of Ayurveda is it addresses the health of the entire body with mind and spirit.

Western medicine addresses bodies in parts, separate from the whole. More allopathically trained physicians are incorporating other modalities like this one.

Greek physicians were using essential oils around 400 BCE. The Greeks received the knowledge from Egypt, along with other knowledge.

When my husband was in hospital, I watched him watch what was happening around him. It was the most devastating thing.

The Roam by Allison L. Williams Hill

The ratio of flowers or seeds to a dram (one eighth of a fluid ounce) of oil, in some cases, is amazing. Another unit of measure used is the milligram, which is one six thousandth of a teaspoon! YIKES!! Imagine that! The next time you dab a little, think of all it took to create that little spot. fifteen milligram bottle of lavender requires one hundred fifty pounds of flowers.

Caregiving and Essential Oils Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are minimally fragrant oils used to dilute essential oils. The volatility of the essential oils are due to the way they are made.

Carrier oils are nourishing to skin and help the skin absorb the oil safely. Essential oils can become rancid as well as the carrier oils. Jojoba and coconut extend the life of the essential oil the longest because they last the longest. Grape seed oil is another excellent carrier.

Olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil are excellent for cooking. It is best to keep them out of light and air to remain fresh. Is should be the same way with carrier oils. The skin is the largest organ and the substance is being absorbed into the body. Always keep essential oils and mixes in dark glass bottles away from light and sealed. Long-time user friends suggested I keep them in the refrigerator. If that is used, warm the mix prior to applying to the care-receiver's body.

What Essential Oils to Use For Caregiving

Essential oils are used for insomnia, poor circulation, skin conditions, swellings, and wounds.

Two pieces of advice: discuss using essential oils with physicians responsible for the care receiver's health.
Hormones for both sexes, women's medical uniqueness, and pregnancy would require different cautions for the care receiver. The other warning is to discuss treatment with a practitioner. Aromatherapists are not required to obtain state certification.

Uplifting and soothing frankincense has a wonderful scent, and it is excellent for changing depression and for respiration. Frankincense is used with myrrh to spiritually cleanse spaces.

Lavender is an anti-depressant as well as an antibacterial. It has a wonderful fragrance that is relaxing, soothing, and warming and, when paired with spikenard, can contribute to its calmative properties. It is used for headaches when rubbed on the temples and neck.

I did not realize the three-pound bag of Epsom salt I bought contained lavender until the customer behind me exclaimed she was surprised it existed. I had a most relaxing, infrequent bath. Dr. Bronner's makes a liquid lavender soap, among other fragrances, that is excellent for showers and baths.

Ylang ylang smells good, relieves sexual anxiety, and may be helpful for those who are celibate.

Sandalwood, frankincense, and myrrh have different but related qualities. They smell wonderful; they work on the respiratory, digestion, and elimination systems, and are antiseptic.

Cedar is another antiseptic oil and is uplifting.

Tea tree oil is antiviral, anti-fungal, and antibacterial. Dr. Bronner's produces hemp tea tree oil soap that cleanses the skin well. I have never seen it written anywhere, but it zaps mosquitoes. Pour enough to smell it in the air, and you don't see mosquitoes around.

Caregiving and Essential Oils for pets

Caregiving and essential oils are not limited to humans. The above post was added February 14, 2018. If you have a person you are caring for and there is a dog in the home, please be careful about using essential oils around it.  These amazing beings contribute a lot to the wellbeing of humans. They deserve to be cared for too. To the creator and the original poster, thank you.
